navajo weaving class

I thought about offering just a weaving class.  I am one of few male Navajo weavers willing to teach a Navajo weaving class.  I want to offer more than a weaving class. I want to offer an experience to people that from a male Navajo weaver’s perspective. I want to share with you traditional sacred places on my reservation, talk with weavers, warp and dress a Navajo loom, and see and smell Navajo sheep!  Weaving is largely dependent on the Navajo shepards, Navajo sheepcamps, shearing, and washing and handspinning the wool.  This is what I have to offer you if you are interested in taking a with Navajo class with me.

I also can offer you a glimpse of my Navajo world with a unique perspective.  I am aware of the Navajo world and culture while also being familiar with the non-Native world.  I like to think of myself as my own cultural interpreter, and I want to offer that to you also.

Here’s the part I am working on.  For 7 days of Navajo weaving, visiting weavers, and traveling to sacred Navajo places, I anticipate on charging $700 to $900 for the weaving class with looms, wool, and tools provided for students to use.  I’d prefer staying at hotels/motels on the Navajo reservation for the 7 days of the class, but I do not know the seasonal/non-seasonal rates.  Please contact me if you have any questions and/or are interested in my Navajo weaving class.

    Hi Morris!
Just read about the weaving class you are thinking about, what a wonderful opportunity! Unfortunately at this time, I have a hand injury which limits my work, and will need further surgery. However, i hope this comes into being, the classes, and hope that you will still be offering them in the future, as this would be a dream come true for me; to be given an opportunity to learn even a little of the knowledge you are willing to share. Many Blessings in your endeavor and thank you for bringing such beauty into all of our lives! Always, Patricia
